Intel Core i7-980X: Extreme Edition First Look

Intel has recently announced its new i7 extreme performance desktop processor, the i7-980X. It sets the bar in performance and will take the crown as the leader in performance over the entire Intel processor series. The i7-980X features a bump up to six physical cores and twelve threads all packed into 32nm. The processor includes Intel's powerful Hyper-threading and Turbo-boost technology, along with an improvement to 12MB smart cache from the previous 8MB. Each of the cores will perform at a blazing 3.33 GHz (3.6 GHz with turbo-boost enabled). Furthermore, the i7-980X is able to be over-clocked to even higher speeds, although its unimaginable why this type of computing power would be needed. Intel has made use of the same LGA1366 socket currently used in its other performance processors, so owners of the X58 motherboard will have no need to upgrade.
The new Core i7-980X will no doubt be the leader in raw computing power at release. All the most demanding and latest games such as Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2, Crysis:Warhead, and Modern Warfare 2 will be able to run flawlessly, providing you have a capable graphics card. Many buyers will be wary of the $999 debut price point, but given a few months that price will fall dramatically. Expect to see the 980X on shelves as soon as next month.
