It'll always come down to purely opinion with each console and its owners, and yes it's nice to be able to own both. But look, not everyone is able to do that. For those who don't have the money laying around to pay for two gaming consoles, it becomes simply a comparison of which console is the better buy. My choice? The PlayStation 3, even with the recent upgrade of the Xbox 360. In fact, this "upgrade" made me realize how truly incapable Microsoft's original console was as an overall package compared to the PlayStation 3.
*Note: I am NOT comparing the gaming capabilities of the consoles. In my opinion, they are even here. Each has its ups and downs, I am merely comparing the features included in each console along with the gaming component. Other people can waste their time arguing that fact, because realistically if I cared THAT much about graphics I would only game on PC.
So let's get back on topic. You've just recieved about $300 as a gift during the holidays, and are looking to purchase your first of the two consoles. Obviously, if you haven't purchased one until this late in the generation you aren't just going to be a pure gamer. You like variety, movies, games, music, socializing. And that's what I personally feel that the PlayStation 3 brings to the table more effectively than the Xbox 360. It's been said before, and I'm going to say it again. Blu-ray on the PS3 makes it a much better value than the other consoles. Not only is it Blu-ray capable, but it now it is also a 3D Blu-ray player. Go ahead and defend the 360 with your life, but until you can afford the $299 for the 250GB console plus at least $200 for a 3D Blu-ray player then there's not much to say. Unless of course, $299 + $200 = $299? Remember, I'm not comparing games I'm comparing the system as an overall package.
I will give the Xbox 360 a 1-up on it's large hard drive, and that's likely where Microsoft put too much into it. The massive hard drive is great and all, but what's the point of all that space when it's never even going to be used? Yes, there are some people out there who will download an insane amount of content to their system, but again I would buy the PlayStation 3 if I were going to do that. Sony's place as a movie publisher really allows the PlayStation Store to flourish with an endless amount of great movies, fully downloadable in 1080p. Plus if you think you need more storage, 500GB 2.5" hard drives compatible with the PlayStation 3 are available for around $50-$60 instead of paying $100 more for the 250GB model.
Wifi is finally included with the 360. It's about time, don't you think? Especially considering even my camera has wifi at this point. It's a great and welcome addition to the new console when I go to purchase it, but it still makes me think...it took five years for them to incorporate something the PlayStation 3 has had since launch.
Nevertheless, I'm going to be buying the newer Xbox 360 as a replacement for my uhm, broken one that can't be fixed for free. (Warranty seal = broken) Why? Because I love gaming as a whole. Do I think my money could go to better use? Yes. But the truth is, I can't play all the games I love on the PlayStation 3, and I can't play all the games I love on the Xbox 360. If you HAVE to choose, I recommend the PlayStation 3 everytime because of everything else it is capable of. But if it's within your means, don't make that choice. Heck, buying both used would probably get them both for the price of one new.

ReplyDeleteThis article isn't very thorough. Firstly, the new 360 is adding the FASTEST version of WIFI available. Secondly, I can easily fill up the 250 gig limit on my elite hard drive and I have done so on a few occasions. Netflix support on the 360 is still better and doesn't require a disk, but in regard to other media options and bluray, I agree with you.

also i do love the comparison on how the PS3 had something on launch while the Xbox did not do you forget the Xbox came out a year before PS3 so doesnt take a genius in sony to look at what is working and what people are asking for in the Xbox and quickly chuck them into the PS3 now if the PS3 had been released first i think the quality of it would be so much less as Sony are known for their poor quality when there is no competition pushing them in the market.
Im afraid you've let your PS3/Sony love bias your opinion. The 360 is the superior product for only a few reasons. More often than not, the 360 gets the new ideas like Netflix, and HD movie downloads first.

360 has more content to download and often gets the content first.

Yes, I could have been more thorough...there are numerous other features that set each console apart that I know of. But for myself, Blu-ray is the major factors.
Each system has many minor conveniences and inconveniences. But for the most part, they can be easily overlooked.
Blu-ray in my opinion is a huge feature. It always has been, and always will be the one big thing setting the PS3 apart from the 360 for me.
It's completely fine for some of you to prefer the Xbox 360. If you only own one console, of course you will prefer that one.
Myself, I own both, and enjoy both. Equally. But when I'm watching movies or need to take a quick look at something on the web, PS3 is where I go.

Love em both own em both. The best combo is PS3 fat(release edition) with 360 Slim. While microsoft is adding improvements Sony's bee pulling things out, like hardware supported reverse compatibility, that why fat is better on PS3.

ReplyDeleteAlso, you need an HDTV to watch bluray in HD, if you dont have highspeed internet then you probably dont have an HDTV either.
Finally, downloads on zune do indeed look better than SOME blurays and are on par with others, you have to understand that blurays are subject to the encoding chosen by the studios, some choose really crappy reproduction methods, thus some blurays look like crap.
I do agree for now bluray has more features and extras, and more audio options.

Most gamers don't use Wi-Fi for gaming, they use Hard-Wired connections, and the 360 is STILL stuck with a old 10/100mbps Ethernet, while PS3 uses the newer 1000mbps Gigabit Ethernet.
You can swap HDD's in PS3's for 500GB, yet in the new 360s you cannot upgrade. The HDD is in a case owned by MS.
HDMI 1.3 in PS3, while 1.2 in 360s.
7.1 FULL D-S-Sound in PS3, 5.1 S-Sound in 360s.
Built in power supply in all PS3's. Another brick for the 360s.

And now thanks to Vavle coming from Gabe's own mouth, PS3 is getting FULL STREAMWORKS and STREAMCLOUD support, while 360 get's nothing at all because it's nothing but a closed system while PS3 is the most open system console wise.
PS3 owners will be able to play against ALL PC and MAC users around the world, while 360 owners cannot do this. And PS3 users don't have to PAY TO PLAY ONLINE unlike 360 owners that have to pay.

Cross game chat is on XBL as standard.
Cross game chat is also used on PSN with selected games, as it's not standard for PSN. It is in the hands on the DEV's that can make this happen and become standard.
XBL doesn't allow people to share bought products from XBL with each other.
PSN does allow people to share bought content from PSN with upto 5 active consoles, both PS3 and PSP can do this, which in the long run saves members money...
.Example..
MW2 MAP-PACKS cost £10.99 ( with extras for that price ) So i could buy these Map-Packs and share with 4 of my PSN friends, meaning they don't have to pay for them.
So lets say you had 5 people, 1 person buys maps for MW2, we now all get them and we all buy different Map-Packs each, the FACT is this.
If i bought MW2 for £10.99 i will also have got 4 other Map-Packs for FREE from my friends, and i don't have to pay to play online using them like you have to do on XBL.
PSN holds nearly 800 films to Rent, with hundreds to buy and own.
XBL has not even 300 films in total.
PSN has better servers and server support than XBL as it is ot a closed system.

people forget that the ps3 web browser opens up a lot of doors for the console, let me explain. xbox has zune and last fm and facebook, twitter, netflix and so on. well the browser allows me to not only stream music from anumber of web sites but also download them straight to the hdd, FOR FREE. same with videos or movies i can stream or download with sites like divxcrawler.com. i can also stream and download PORN from a number of sites, FREE. facebook the actual facebook free, twitter free, pandora free, netflix free, youtube free oh and the whole internet on my tv free. on xbox if you dont play games at all online(like my father in law) but you wanna watch netflix, or twitter or facebook or even something simple as streaming music, you have to drop cash first. ill take the netflix disc along with just ONE netflix fee any day over paying two seperate fees to watch netflix, plus netflix customer support already told me netflix will be an app for ps3 this year and the disc willl no longer be required. anyone saying digital 1080p movies are better than blu ray is a fool and has never owned a blu ray player. its the reason ms cant match ps3 exclusives, blu ray is the best option for physical media, look at dead space 2 coming with ds extraction on one blu ray disc for 60 bucks for the ps3. or medal of honor frontlines remastered in hi def along with the new medal of honor game on one BLU RAY disc. try doing that with a dvd 9.

Now with the Xbox 360 slim you can add many movies to your catalogue and store them for future viewing. On top of that add kinect which will be control free and the Xbox by far seems like the better purchase. I am tired of everyone over hyping 3D and blueray which both are overated. Not to take anything away from either but we all know that Microsoft online is definitely much better for viewing movies with easy user inferface. This article is truly incomplete.

ReplyDeleteThe new 360s has a shut down feature built into 45nm chipset. It will close the console down after showing you a warning screen for 10 mins ( MIN )each time. The green LED will turn red. Once the console has cooled down the red LED will turn back to green and start up again.
Now that STILL means the 360s suffers with HEAT PROBLEMS.This is because Microsoft have used the same X-Clamp in the 360s as they did in all the older models.
So cutting a long story short, the 360s is STILL not as reliable as PS3.
And if people want to talk about prices, the PS3 cost £30.00 more than the new 360s, but that changes as soon as you want to go online doesn't it.? It's an extra £30.00 per person to play online on top of the xbox 360 price you just paid.
If you have a family of 5 and they all want their own membership thats an extra £150.00 for XBL while it is FREE £0.00 for PSN. So when people want to compare prices, 360's and XBL cost more than PS3 and PSN in the long run.

Did you forget sony now is charging for online services besides there micro transactions they have always charged. Sonys machine is ok but ms is the true winner in the games dept especially if you enjoy rpgs. Ps3 really only has one rpg in demon soles that was any compairson to the 360s 25 rpgs to 35 rpgs. So yes the ps3 has blueray but I play games on my system and last I checked the 360 does a damn good job at that and last now that the 360 one ups the ps3 wifi its not all of a sudden better to plug it it....how funny as that sure sounds famiiar. 360 doesn't have an internet service at all. It is a closed system. Silver accounts cannot play online ( which is why gold accounts are needed )for online gaming.
PSN is not charging members money to play online, the standard memberships do not change due to the new premium memberships. All PSN members can play online for FREE.
RPG's on PS3 are better than what are on the 360. Demon's Souls is rated the BEST EVER RPG ON CONSOLES, so that alone speaks volumes. Heres a quick list i know thats on PS3.

MS released the XBOX 360 ONE YEAR before the official release date meant for the console. All consoles were to be release around the same time span. But MS knew about the heating problems and released the console anyway.
For us in the UK it was 15-18 months before we saw any other console after 360 got released. So what people have to remember is the simple fact that MS and their 360 had no Competition on the market to compete with 360.
Now what people also need to remember is how long it takes a console to really show what it can do, and the average time span for this is around 2 years. So when PS3 came onto the UK market the 360 was nearly showing the world what it could do, while the PS3 had nothing.
But now the times have changed, as the few years that were needed like talked about on here have shown what the console can really do. An that is better graphics than 360 and a more paowerful mchine in the long run. Example, God Of War III used 50% of the PS3's power. Yet there is not a game on 360 that can match the graphics or shear size of that game. And the 360 has been out much longer than PS3.
Now when people talk about games looking better on 360, Multi-Plat games. Example (( Look at bayonetta 360 version is much better tha PS3 )) thats not the console fault but that of the developers. Because if it was the console all multi plat games would look better, but that isn't the case. Example (( Split second ))
BUT then look at this game (( Final Fantasy 13 )). This shows the 360 in a different like than normal Multi-plat games. That FACT is in this games case 360 run out of space, and had to have the whole game compressed onto 3 discs while PS3 game being placed onto 1 BLU-RAY disc gave us the game as the dev's intended us to see it and play it. The 360 console showed it's limitations. This showed that Xbox 360's DVD and DVD-DL was not allowing dev's to give games they really wanted to do, BUT on the PS3 it was possible.
Look at the RAGE game as another example.
So when people say about " we don't care about Blu-Ray as we don't want to watch films, we want to play games " that is just a dumb and stupid thing to say.
BLU-RAY holds more space and due to this that means that you get BETTER GRAPHICAL GAMES, as textures, ect don't need to be compressed by dev's, unlike the 360's DVD format that has to be compressed.
Wow has any body noticed that the new xbox is a copy of the first generation ps3.
